Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd. (KWL) is currently seeking a Civil Engineering Design Technologist with 5 - 12 years experience for a full-time position within its Calgary office commencing September, 2019.

Typical assignments include:  

  • Work closely with design engineers, technicians, technologists and Project Managers in the preparation of supporting documents and drawing packages, report figures, design concepts, technical specifications and design calculations;
  • 3D modelling of project features and designs;
  • Coordination with other team members and other units in related operations;
  • Develop cost-effective civil designs in accordance with industry established design guidelines and procedures, adopted project design criteria, and develop design drawings in accordance with industry and in-house CAD standards;
  • Analyze design issues and recommend corrective actions;
  • Use software tools and techniques, and apply appropriate technologies to prepare effective designs;
  • Maintain accurate design files and drawing records for reference purposes;
  • Maintain good internal client relationships and management consistent with assigned projects;
  • Manage time and tasks within allotted timelines and budgets;
  • Perform design changes and improvements according to changing project demands;
  • Provide assistance to design and construction teams;
  • Prepare material quantity and construction cost and material estimates;
  • Ensure compliance with KWL Quality Management Program and corporate policies/procedures; and
  • Perform other duties within the assigned organizational group at KWL.

What We’re Looking For

The right person… 

The applicant must have a keen interest in Civil3D design and drafting software packages, river and stormwater engineering, earthworks, pipelines and civil engineering in general.  Knowledge of civil and mechanical design and surveying principles would be considered an asset.  Effective communication, both written and spoken, in English is mandatory.

Qualifications and competencies, include:

  • A positive and motivated personality! 
  • You have completed a Diploma in Civil Engineering or Drafting Technology from a recognized community college or trade school
  • 5 - 12 years design and detailing experience in site development, roadways, pipelines, channels, river banks, drainage, retention ponds.
  • Thorough expertise with AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office is mandatory, familiarity with other software programs (e.g. Revit and ArcGIS) would be considered as asset.
  • Construction experience such as survey layout, quantity surveying, inspections, and construction administration is considered an asset.
  • Travel within Alberta and B.C. may be required and a valid driver’s license (in good standing) is mandatory.
  • Ability and interest in mentoring junior staff.
