Engineering Excellence Awarded to Team for Flood Emergency Response on Highway 8 Reconstruction Project

We are pleased to announce that Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd. and Ecora Engineering and Resource Group have been awarded the ACEC-BC Award of Merit in the Natural Resource and Habitat category for their work on the Highway 8 – Hydrotechnical and Geotechnical Emergency Response project.

The project involved the reconstruction of Highway 8, which was severely damaged by a record flood caused by an atmospheric river in November 2021.  The team faced several challenges, including slope stability issues, rockfall and landslide hazards, and river-related hazards.  Despite these difficulties, they were able to develop a typical cross-section for the corridor, minimizing future instream works in the recovery phase.

The team’s focus on balancing public safety and nature was essential, and they succeeded in minimizing encroachment into the river while maintaining river capacity and fish habitat.  In addition, they installed habitat enhancement features at select locations to initiate habitat recovery.

The project’s success is a testament to the expertise and dedication of Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd. and Ecora Engineering and Resource Group, who overcame significant challenges to deliver a more resilient highway, better equipped to withstand future floods.  We congratulate the team on their well-deserved Award of Merit.
